Directors' bios

Riason Naidoo (b.1970) is an independent curator and writer; trained as an artist (painter). He was director of the South African National Gallery (2009-2015), director of the South Africa-Mali Project: Timbuktu Manuscripts (2003-09), in charge of artistic projects at the French Institute of South Africa (2001-03), taught drawing and painting at the University of the Witwatersrand (1999-2001) and was in charge of art education at the Durban Art Gallery (1996-99). Among his curated projects are Any Given Sunday (2016), 1910-2010: From Pierneef to Gugulective (2010), The Indian in DRUM magazine in the 1950s (2006). He has curated retrospective exhibitions on: artist Peter Clarke (2012-13), shown in Senegal, England and France; on photographer Ranjith Kally (2004-2007), exhibited in South Africa, Mali, Austria, Spain and Reunion Island.     

 

Damon Heatlie (b.1969) is a screenwriter/ filmmaker and Senior Lecturer at Wits University. Damon produced over 60 local music videos (from Brenda Fassie to Mandoza), and directed for such musical heavyweights as Hugh Masekela and Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens).
